For centuries its flame burned above the harbour mouth, a fixed point in the dark that guided merchant ships home from distant seas, their holds heavy with silk and spice from lands few had seen. Sailors who had crossed the Mediterranean and the Ligurian Sea steered by its light through the final miles, trusting it above all else. Its beam illuminated the way for those returning from far-off lands — and exposed those who crept through the dark without leave.
